SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY resurrects the buried history of the outrageous, often brilliant women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971. SHE’S BEAUTIFUL takes us from the founding of NOW, with ladies in hats and gloves, to the emergence of more radical factions of women’s liberation; from intellectuals like Kate Millett to the street theatrics of W.I.T.C.H. (Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell!). Artfully combining dramatizations, performance and archival imagery, the film recounts the stories of women who fought for their own equality, and in the process created a world-wide revolution.
Join us for a discussion of the film with Dr. Kara Kvaran, who teaches Women’s Studies at the University of Akron. In 2004, she received her bachelor’s degree in history from Eastern Michigan University. She continued her studies in American History and feminist theory at Purdue University and was awarded her master’s degree in 2006 and her doctorate in 2011. Dr. Kvaran’s research interests lay at the intersection of modern American popular culture and gender. Her dissertation, which she is currently revising into a manuscript, was titled Gendered Underground: Men, Women, and American Punk Rock, 1965-1995. She has also written on homosexuality and comic books and is currently working on a socio-economic analysis of slasher films.
