MOLA Gallery

The MOLA Gallery Features the Extraordinary Mola Textile art by the Kuna People of Panama in Central America.

The Mola is one of the finest examples of textile art, created by the Kuna people of Panama. Mola is the word for blouse used by the Kuna and each unique Mola is made by hand, using thousands of tiny stitches and layers of different fabric through a process known as reverse applique.

The fabric is cut out and tucked under, revealing each layer of material beneath, forming the intricate and colorful designs. The Kuna create their Mola artistry by drawing on ideas or narratives from their island environment, history, culture and beliefs and often include traditional appliqué and embroidery embellishments.

Julia Dick has collected Molas for more than 40 years by purchasing directly from Kuna artists on the Kuna Yala San Blas islands off the northern coast of Panama and from and other Mola collectors. MOLA Gallery also features art from other areas of Panama and Central America.
